The Swiss Continence Foundation Board comprises the following persons:


Ass. Prof. Thomas M. Kessler, M.D.

Chairman of the Foundation Board

Thomas M. Kessler was born in 1974. He studied medicine at the universities in Fribourg, Lausanne, and Bern (graduation in 2000 as „Dr. med.“, MD) and underwent further education as a surgeon in Sursee and Zofingen. In 2003, after having completed basic surgical education, he switched to the Department of Urology, University of Bern (Inselspital), where he underwent speciality training under Prof. Dr. med. Urs E. Studer and obtained a specialist title as an urologist in 2007. Kessler specialized in Neuro-Urology at the University Hospital of Innsbruck under Prof. Dr. med. Helmut Madersbacher (2004) and at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, University College London, under Prof. Dr. med. Clare J. Fowler (2008). In addition to his clinical activities, Kessler also worked as a research fellow at the Horten Center for practice-oriented research and knowledge transfer at the University Hospital Zürich from 2007 to 2009. In 2010, he habilitated in urology at the University of Bern (Ass. Prof., PD) and became head of Neuro-Urology at Balgrist University Hospital. Kessler is the author of more than 80 publications in peer-reviewed medical journals and books.

Apart from his work at Balgrist University Hospital, Kessler is consultant at the Department of Urology, University of Bern (Inselspital). He is the president of the Swiss Study Group for Sacral Neuromodulation (SSSNM), a member of several international and national societies as well as a reviewer of several medical journals.

Ulrich Mehnert, M.D., FEBU

Vice-Chairman of the Foundation Board


Ulrich Mehnert was born in 1977. From 1998 to 2004, he studied human medicine at Ulm University, Germany, and completed a 4-months clinical internship in the US, including but not limited to the Department of Urology of the Yale-New Haven Hospital in New Haven, CT, US, under Prof. Dr. med. R. M. Weiss. In 2005, he earned his doctorate (Dr. med., MD) at Ulm University and underwent further education in the field of urology in the Department of Urology and Pediatric Urology at the University Medical Center Schleswig-Holstein, Kiel, Germany, under Prof. Dr. med. K.-P. Jünemann.

From 2006 to 2009, Dr. Mehnert worked as a junior doctor and scientific associate in Neuro-Urology, Spinal Cord Injury Center & Research, University of Zürich, Balgrist University Hospital, under Prof. Dr. med. B. Schurch. Since 2009, he is the project leader in the field of neuro-urological research at Balgrist University Hospital. In 2010, he continued his surgical education in the field of urology and focused on methods of surgical therapy in neuro-urological patients at Hôpital Pitié-Salpêtrière of the University of Paris IV under Prof. Dr. med. E. Chartier-Kastler and Prof. Dr. med. M. O. Bitker.
From 2011 to 2014, Dr. Mehnert completed his speciality training in urology under Prof. Dr. med. J. Noldus in the department of Urology and Neuro-Urology at Marienhospital Herne, Ruhr University Bochum and obtained a specialist title as an urologist in 2014.

Dr. Mehnert is Fellow of the European Board of Urology (FEBU) and currently working as consultant in Neuro-Urology at Balgrist University Hospital.

Ulrich Mehnert is the author of several publications in peer-reviewed medical journals and he is a member of several national and international societies. He is the principal investigator/main applicant of several research grants (inter alia of Swiss National Science Foundation) and a reviewer of several medical journals.
